Barcelona was chosen to hold the XXIV ICOS International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) on August 28th, 2008, during the ICOS General Assembly Meeting held in Toronto (Canada) within the framework of the XXIII Congress.
The first ICOS Congress was held in Paris in 1938 although it was not until the second congress, in the same city in 1947, that congresses began to be held at regular intervals. Since then, they have taken place every three years, with the XXIV Congress scheduled to be held in Barcelona in September 2011.
ICOS brings together leading scholars and those interested in onomastics from around the world. Their fields of research encompass the study of proper personal names (or anthroponyms), place names (or toponyms) and all types of proper names. The official languages of ICOS are English, French and German. For the Barcelona Congress, these official languages have been broadened to include Catalan and Aranese, as the official languages in Catalonia, and Spanish, also official in our country.
